Basic knowledge for cooking cannabis
What is decarboxylating?
Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction in which a molecule of carbon dioxide is split off from a molecule by heating.
Enough science! Now let’s get back to cooking.
Start
Ingredients:
- Buds
- Baking paper
- Oven
- Grinder
Step 1 – Decarboxylate your cannabis according to the time and temperature requirements for your Cannabinoid of choice. Preheat oven to 115°C (?degrees) , spread buds on baking paper and bake at 115°C (???degrees) for 90 minutes.
Step 2 – Cool for 5min and then put the decarboxylated buds into a grinder.
Step 3 – Grind until a fine, powdery consistency is achieved.
Step 4 – Add your cannabis powder to your favourite food or store it for later use.

You can generally eat decarbonised cannabis quite easily. Just remember to eat it with a meal or other fat source for maximum bioavailability.
However, there are a few things you should know before you start!
This guide will tell you everything you need to know about making edibles with decarbonised cannabis, including the decarbonisation process, the importance of combining it with fat and some tasty recipes to try out.
Before adding decarbonised cannabis to your cannabis edibles, it is important to know that you will be changing the taste and consistency of cannabis.
However, if you don’t mind the taste of cannabis and are looking for a quicker and easier way to make edibles, adding decarbonised buds to your edibles could be the perfect solution for you.
As for texture, I recommend grinding your cannabis buds as small as possible to get the best possible result; a coffee grinder is great for this.
This creates a fine cannabis powder that can be added to almost any recipe, similar to how we use onion powder or ground oregano in cooking.
One thing to remember is not to confuse this cannabis powder with cannabis oil powder.
If you are not familiar with the process of decarboxylation, you should first read my guide about decarboxylating cannabis.
This simple process of baking cannabis buds in the oven helps convert cannabinoid acids into their active form.
Of course, THC is not the only cannabinoid that needs to be activated, you can also decaffeinate CBD buds, CBG buds and even CBN.
If you don’t know these cannabinoids yet and want to experiment, you can buy CBD buds and CBG buds in our Shop.
If you just need a quick and easy reference for times and temperatures, here is our simple decarboxylation chart, for CBD:
CBD → Bake at 115°C for 90 minutes.
For the best possible results, I recommend eating the decarbonated buds along with some form of fat.
This means that adding a fat source to your cannabis edibles can make them up to 2.5 to 3 times more potent than if you omit a fat source
From sweet to savoury, there are so many ways to use decarbonised buds in your favourite cannabis recipes.
One of the most popular ways is simply adding decarbonised buds to a batch of brownies.
